Replacing the Throttle Cable

Today was a busy day on the car front, but the only thing I got done on the car was replacing the throttle cable and putting a couple bolts in at the front of the footbox that I forgot.

What I really spent the day doing — four or five hours, was pushing the car out of the garage and cleaning the garage. It was a huge amount of work. The garage had become a huge wreck since the last time I did it, and since I couldn’t find help to put the body on, it was a good productive thing to do anyway.

The old throttle cable had gotten damaged when I first installed it. I trimmed the cable to length before running it through the sheath, and one of the wires in the cable got caught and unraveled. In reality, I’m sure the cable would’ve been fine, but before I got everything all together I figured it was best to replace it. After disconnecting the cable from the throttle body, I pulled it back into the footbox and removed it from the pedal. There was a circlip holding a pin connecting the end of the cable to the pedal.

Getting the circlip back on was a long process, with a lot of profane language and uncomfortable contortions.

The cable is installed, although I didn’t hook it up to the throttle body. I want to ensure the cable isn’t going to fray again, so I may rig something up to do a quick spot weld on the wire where I want to trim it just to be sure.

While putting the throttle cable in, I noticed there was still a cleco in the front of the footbox.

The patch panel the wire harness passes through was not attached to the car. Thankfully I noticed it before putting the body on. I removed the cleco and riveted the top of the panel on.

Once the rivet was in, I put the two bolts in that hold the bottom of the plate. They’re not supporting anything, but the holes were big and that was the best way to fill them anyway.

I’m still hoping I find help with the body tomorrow, but if not I’ll definitely have help next weekend. Its immensely disappointing to not have the car done when I was planning, but its also a bit of a load off my back, because its not such a rush anymore.
